Understanding the SSW Visa

The SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) visa is a program introduced by the Japanese government to attract skilled foreign workers to fill labor shortages in specific industries. It allows you to work in Japan with a status that recognizes your professional skills and language proficiency.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Document Preparation

  • Before diving into exams, ensure you have your legal documents in order.
  • Passport: You must have a valid passport for international travel.
  • Educational Certificates: Gather your academic transcripts and certificates, as these are often required during the job application and COE phases.

Step 2: Language Proficiency (First Phase)

Communication is key. You must pass one of the following two recognized Japanese language exams to prove you have at least an N4 level (basic conversational) proficiency:

  • JLPT N4: Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

  • JFT-Basic: Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese.

Step 3: Skill Evaluation Test

In addition to the language, you must prove you have the technical skills required for your specific work sector (e.g., Agriculture, Nursing Care, Food Service, etc.).

You must sit for and pass the Skill Evaluation Test relevant to your chosen industry.

Step 4: Job Application & Interview (Second Phase)

Once you have passed your language and skill exams, you can begin the employment process:

  • Job Apply: Interview with Japanese companies looking for foreign workers.

  • Offer Letter: If the interview is successful, the company will issue an official Job Offer Letter, which serves as your employment contract.

Step 5: COE Application (Third Phase)

After the contract is signed, the legal processing begins in Japan:

  • The employer applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at the Japanese Immigration Bureau on your behalf.
  • The COE is the most important legal document required to enter Japan for work.

Step 6: Visa Application (Fourth Phase)

Once your COE is issued and sent to you:

  • You must visit the Japanese Embassy in your home country to apply for the actual visa.

  • The embassy will verify your documents and COE, then stamp the visa into your passport.

Step 7: Labor Permit & Departure (Fifth Phase)

The final administrative step before flying:

  • Labor Permit: Obtain mandatory labor approval/clearance from the Department of Foreign Employment (e.g., the Labor Office in Nepal).
  • Departure: Once all approvals are in hand, you are ready to fly to Japan and start your career!
